Great Moments In Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch: Mystery Penguins Scarf

First off, Happy Birthday to Karissa, who sent in a few of her bday gifts. She got several unlicensed Pittsburgh sports merch items, and happily shared.

I’ll start by featuring this amazing scarf. You see the numbers 71 and 87 anywhere, and you automatically know the Pens are in the equation. Even if the object (in this case, the scarf) has no mention of the team or officially-licensed logos or names, you can bet it’s about the Pens. That’s not even mentioning the easily recognizable 29 (MAF), 11 (Staalsy) and…20?

When did Colby Armstrong come back? Or is this scarf just giving props to Wheeling Nailers defenseman Kyle Bushee?

Here’s Karissa’s thoughts:

Before I mention the scarf, let me tell you that he bought these from a guy selling them at a bar.

Yeah, AT A BAR. Oh, my dad. And we don’t even live in the city. Hell, we don’t even live in a town!

So anyway, this guy tells my dad he’s selling this merchandise… and the guy convinces him to buy the scarf because “If your daughter likes Penguins, she’ll love this scarf- it has all the starters!”

First of all, starters? What is this, football?

Anyway, unless we have a mystery #20 or I’ve time-warped back to the days of Colby Armstrong, this scarf’s a little inaccurate.

Exactly. My thoughts…bar dude has been trying to off this scarf since the Winter Classic win over the Sabres in January 08. Colby was still around, and was probably the only other “star” worthy of a place on this scarf. Gonch wasn’t a name on offense, Talbot hadn’t come into his own…who else from that team would’ve made it onto a totally sick unlicensed scarf?

As for the “starters” thing…we’ll chalk it up to ignorance. I’d love to see Sid, Geno, MAF, Staal and some random guy in a #20 shirt play an entire game against anyone.

If you have any unlicensed Pittsburgh sports gear, or awesome generic sports gear from any team, send them to me and I’ll post them.
