Great Moments In Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch: This Steelers/Penguins Championship Shirt

Well this seems like a good enough way to kick off Great Moments in Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch. I got this for my birthday from my aunt. As noted, the Steelers and Penguins are both champions of their respective sports, in so many words. The shirt clearly  references each team, although there isn’t a name or logo to be found. The shirt even has the football helmet in Black and Steeler Gold, while the hockey mask is in the Pens’ Black and Vegas Gold.

But whoa, I’ve never seen that helmet before. The Steelers don’t have a license on the name of the city, so that’s the best this shirt can offer. The color scheme is there, but that helmet is just generic. I would give points for the effort, but the Steelers helmets are iconic. And on the Pens side, no Penguins goalie has ever worn a mask like that. The shirt-makers mimicked the faux-Steelers helmet idea onto a goalie mask.

The shirt’s font even tries to appeal to your sense of familiarity. You can see that the words are not actually in the famous Gunplay font, but they did go for a stencil-esque look. And the  letters look like riveted sheets of steel, a style found throughout Heinz Field.

And yes, I took a picture of myself in the shirt so you know I’m not kidding you that I own this and every other piece of unlicensed Steelers merch that’ll be posted at PSAMP for the rest of the work week. Except I had to flip the image so the reversed mirror reflection would look correct to your eyes. Is your mind blown yet?

Stay tuned for more Great Moments in Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch posts through Friday. If you have any unlicensed Pittsburgh sports gear, or awesome generic sports gear from any team, send them to me and I’ll post them.
