The 2016 U.S. Open is still months away, but that isn’t cooling down the anticipation of Jordan Spieth returning to defend his title. Spieth will undoubtedly enter June with the best odds to win, but he will have to do so with a new venue hosting the event and history working against him.
Spieth was white hot throughout 2015 in what was basically a coming out party, but the competition will be fierce when the U.S. Open tees off on Thursday, June 16th. Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson and possibly even Tiger Woods could be on hand at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, and those are just a handful of the big names that could get in Spieth’s way as he tries to make history.
This could be unprecedented territory, of course, as Spieth has a realistic shot at giving the U.S. Open it’s first repeat champion since Curtis Strange snagged back to back titles in 1988 and 1989. No one has done so since and only Tiger Woods has managed to win multiple U.S. Open championships (three) since the year 2000. Woods could add to the excitement with a bid for a fourth U.S. Open title in the last 16 years if he can get past numerous health woes, but the field itself could be enough of a challenge for Spieth to falter.
The hype of Spieth’s blazing run and the odds of a new champion emerging add supreme value to 2016 U.S. Open tickets, especially since fans can get in on the first day for as low as $80. U.S. Open tickets naturally only climb from there, with tickets starting out at $95 on Friday the 16th and jumping again on Saturday the 17th to $104 and higher. It’s Sunday that everyone will really be amped up for, of course, as the final day of the 2016 U.S. Open should feature only the best of the best and could even include a heated playoff for all the marbles. Despite the potential for a huge finish on the final day of the U.S. Open, U.S. Open Championship Round tickets can currently be had for as little as $109.
U.S. Open tickets are only going to rise as the event draws closer, giving die hard PGA Tour fans three full months to secure them while they’re still available. Not only will the value of U.S. Open tickets sharpen, but as we learn more about the exact field and see how some of the top golfer’s seasons play out, the hype surrounding the U.S. Open could get out of control. Whether that leads to a crazy spike in ticket prices or the event being sold out entirely, now may be the time for fans to make sure their spot at Oakmont Country Club is reserved.
History could be made in many ways come June, as Spieth has a chance to join a very short (and prestigious) list of multi-winning champions at the historic U.S. Open. Even better, is PGA fans could be graced with a new young champion or we could get another new multi-winner like Rory McIlroy, Webb Simpson, Justin Rose or Martin Kaymer. Predicting how it goes down is fruitless, but one thing is for sure – the 2016 U.S. Open is unlikely to disappoint.
