Thanks to the infamous Wayne for this. It’s another he sent in back during the Pens-Habs playoff series. He sent in a number, and I’ve been slowly getting to them all among the many others that the rest of you have contributed. Because I’m lazy.
This one uses the common generic trend of altering a version of the one of the official logos in order to make a team shirt without obtaining a license. I mean most unlicensed shirts are so awful that it’d be tough to fit into a crowd of nothing but official gear, but this one is pretty close, over-simplicity aside.
The numbers of the star players end up as representative of the team as the offical logos and mascots. As a Pittsburgh sports fan, if you see the numbers 66, 68 or 87 anywhere and you automatically think of the Pens. You see 36, 86, 88, 12 or 7 and it’s easy to imagine the Steelers. Same for 21 and 8 for the Buccos. This shirt has Evgeni Malkin’s now-iconic 71 over an upside-down triangle in place of the normal skating penguin, inside a dark blue circle. Normally in the retro Pens logo, that dark-blue circle says PITTSBURGH PENGUINS rather than PITTSBURGH HOCKEY. But the powder blue behind it drives the point home.
If you have any unlicensed Pittsburgh sports gear, or awesome generic sports gear from any team, send them to me and I’ll post them.
