Thanks to Steve for this. He says:
“35 year old unlicensed pgh sports merchandise is a frickin’ gold mine!! Different # on jersey shoulder and front too. And it combines a HOF RB in Franco (32) with an unknown 4 year Steelers LB Ed Bradley (38) Wonder if he played SpecialTeams too? LOL!“
Jeez what a shirt! And the eBay seller knows it, as its currently for sale, sitting pretty at 225 DOLLARS! It’s a vintage, original 1974 Superman Steelers Super Bowl Champs shirt. And as Steve pointed out, the vendor clearly messed up on the numbering.
Numbering discrepancy aside, the image is classic. And it shows that unlicensed Pittsburgh sports merch has been pretty unique throughout the ages. When you’re purposefully trying to bypass an official license, you’re just inviting some sort of potential disaster.
I’m putting all Strip District vendors on notice that someone needs to recreate this image on a new line of generic Steelers shirts. Until then, somebody front me $225.
If you have any unlicensed Pittsburgh sports gear, or awesome generic sports gear from any team, send them to me and I’ll post them.
